CERÁMICA ESPAÑOLA DE TERUEL - "PUNTER"

MIJASCERAMIC.COM

Domingo Punter and his children have a background of five generation of ceramic makers from Teruel (Aragón), in the northern part of Spain.

This is a very unique type of ceramic; there is nothing like this in the word. You love it, or you don't like it. I really believe it’s very special and a tremendous amount of work goes in to theses pieces. This ceramic is a very dense, so the pieces are surprising heave. The clay in this part of Spain is very dark red, which gives this craftsmanship a very unique look.

What they do is reproduce the Spanish Romanic style ceramic from the XIV century. As you can see, the design is very primitive and they only use black and green, that where the colours used during that period.

I must admit that besides using the old technique, they are very creative and have given their personal touch to these traditional pieces, creating new forms, but always with the classic finish. For me they are certainly pieces of Spanish art work.

CERAMIC FROM TOLEDO (RENAISSANCE STYLE) - "Robles"

Robles, is know to be one of the masters of Spanish Craftsmanship in ceramic, from Puente del Arzobispo in the province of Toledo. Very rare pieces, as he works by himself, and makes very few piece each month and his style is known to be called Renascence style from the 18th. century.

He is known as “Goro”, and his son is working with him now, I really hope that he gets the skills of his father, it would be really a shame that a work like this would die out. In 23 years of experience I have seen a few craftsman that simple have died, and no ones has followed his work, it’s certainly heart breaking for a lover of craftsmanship like me.

You will see a few religious pieces, as that is his great especially. Also he is very good for reproducing different episodes of the book of Cervantes “Don Quijote”, he is famous for painting the 40 prints of the first book printed of “Don Quijote”, it took him a few years of work.

You can see in the pictures, the details of his work and the carefulness that he takes to paint even the smallest of the things he makes. I must admit, he is extraordinary artist, and a better person. The wonderful thing about my work, is that I know each one of the artisans, they are my friends, more than partners in this group of craftsmen.

If you are thinking in ordering many pieces "Forget about it", I personally have to wait for months to get a few pieces. The collection I have in the shop is because I have been saving pieces for years, and slowly I have got a reasonably good collection.
